Chloe Malle Officially Named As Anna Wintour’s Successor Of Vogue US

The call is coming from inside the house. Anna Wintour, the longstanding sunglass-wearing matriarch of Vogue US, has officially chosen Vogue.com editor Chloe Malle as the new leader of the beloved fashion publication.

The news was confirmed by Vogue on Wednesday morning (local time) in a statement on the fashion masthead’s website.

“Chloe Malle is Head of Editorial Content for American Vogue, effective immediately,” the statement read.

“In this new position, Malle, who is currently the editor of Vogue.com and co-host of The Run-Through, Vogue’s weekly fashion and culture podcast, will lead the creative and editorial direction of the title and join Vogue’s 10 existing Heads of Editorial Content around the world, reporting to Anna Wintour.”

The 39-year-old joined the publication in 2011 as a features editor and has been editor of the dot com since 2023.

“Anna Wintour is clear-eyed, determined, and optimistic, but rarely daring,” wrote fashion journalist Lauren Sherman for Puck News when the news was first reported earlier in the week.

“Her tenure in the Condé Nast corporate suite has been defined by choosing editorial leaders whose visions would largely fit within hers. And this balance influenced her search for the next editor of American Vogue — now called the head of editorial content.”

The role was up for grabs after Wintour announced that she was stepping down from her position back in June. However, the role of editor-in-chief has been renamed to head of editoral content with the Vogue.com digital editor, with Malle reportedly stepping into the top gig.

Most recently, it was Malle who wrote the high-profile write-up of Lauren Sánchez Bezos‘ and documented her extravagant wedding to Jeff Bezos. She has also had her byline featured in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Outside of work, the 39-year-old is a married mum-of-two and the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and late screenwriter Louis Malle.

While Wintour is no longer at the helm of the magazine and its online content, she isn’t retiring completely. According to a Condé Nast representative, the media executive will still hold the position of global chief content officer and global editorial director of Condé Nast.

As a result, Malle will be reporting to her.

Wintour first took control of the masthead in 1988 and, with her curated control over covers and distinct editorial voice, completely changed the game for Vogue, transforming it from a fashion magazine to a cultural institution. With her distinctive voice and look, Wintour has also become known as one of the most influential names in fashion and magazine journalism.

The 75-year-old became firmly cemented in pop culture history with 2003’s The Devil Wears Prada, in which the fictionalised Anna Wintour, Miranda Priestly, was played by Meryl Streep.
