Chiwell park closed after 'mindless vandals' damage site three times in less than month

Major damage was caused to a Chilwell park by vandals for the third time in less than a month - leaving it closed.

The latest incident saw Inham Nook play ground's climbing ladders and platforms damaged on Tuesday, August 20.

The play area is currently closed, whilst the council obtains the necessary spare platforms, ladders and support chains to make the equipment safe and useable.

It follows two previous incidents earlier this month when the same climbing frame was vandalised, leaving it unsafe.

Councillor Helen Skinner, chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee and ward member for Chilwell West, said: "I am saddened by these acts of mindless vandalism.

“This selfish behaviour from just a few people not only affects all those who use the park and treat it well, but also the tax payer, who ultimately ends up paying for the repairs.

"I’d like to thank our environment team who work hard to repair damage on our parks as soon as they can so that children can get back to enjoying themselves at the play areas. I would urge any residents who witnessed this incident or any suspicious behaviour to report it.”

The council’s playground inspector, Jim Wynne, was first made aware of the latest incident on Tuesday, August 20 after "major damage" to the platforms and climbing ladder on the large climbing structure.

The police have been notified and are reviewing CCTV from the park, according to Broxtowe Borough Council.

Witnesses are urged to come forward with information by phoning the police on 101.
