The Justice Fund committee has rejected a request by former protest leader Chitpas "Tant" Kridakorn for financial aid after she failed to show sufficient grounds to justify the request, a senior official said.
Ms Chitpas was a key supporter of the now-defunct People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).
She faces several charges in the wake of the months-long "Bangkok shutdown" demonstrations prior to the May 2014 coup.
Thawatchai Thaikhiew, deputy permanent justice secretary, said the panel turned down Ms Chitpas' request because she did not submit the necessary documents. The committee had sent a letter asking her to submit her tax payment records as part of the consideration process, but the letter was returned to sender.
The deputy permanent secretary said whether financial aid is granted has no bearing on the case against a person who requests it, and that the request can't be used as a pretext for seeking to postpone an indictment.
He said the Justice Fund was set up to provide legal and financial aid to those who are poor.
Ms Chitpas reportedly applied on May 28, a few days before she was scheduled to report to the prosecution on May 31 to hear if she would be indicted.
