'Chirpy' Hearts jibes in league defeat fired Alloa's Alan Trouten up for Betfred Cup shock

Alloa goal hero Alan Trouten revealed the Wasps were fired up to shock Hearts in the Betfred Cup after comments made by some of Robbie Neilson's players during their league defeat to the Jambos last week.

The veteran striker fired home from the penalty spot in extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes at the Indodrill Stadium to dump the Gorgie club out of the competition at the knockout stage days after they brushed their part-time opponents aside in Championship action.

Neilson branded the award of the spot kick a "bad decision" after being booked for remonstrating with official Gavin Duncan after the final whistle, claiming there was "no contact" between Jamie Walker and Robert Thomson in the area.

But Trouten, who slotted home ten minutes from the end of the additional 30, told how their 'chirpy' full time opponents were left silenced despite being vocal in the Wasps' 3-0 defeat at Tynecastle on Tuesday.

"A couple of their players made comments during the game on Tuesday when it was 3-0 and easy for them," he said after the game.

"I'll keep what was said on the park. It's easy enough, especially for these guys earning good money when we've been at work all day, for them to be chirpy at 3-0.

"So that fired us up. It was mentioned among the boys what their players said.

He added: "A few of their boys weren't very chirpy as the game went on today."

Alloa were 3-0 down before the interval at Tynecastle but stunned the Jambos on their own patch after a turgid 90 minutes before Trouten struck.

It set up a reunion with former manager Jack Ross for the Clackmannanshire side, with Hearts' capital rivals Hibs revealed as their quarter-final opponents.

The Alloa striker admitted it was something of a novelty to be just a game away from a place at Hampden, but insisted they will not fear the Premiership side when the Leith outfit visit the Indodrill Stadium in December.

"Hearts are a very good team, they deserved to win on Tuesday and could've had a few more," Trouten admitted.

"They've got good players who have played at a good level. We know our situation, we've had that most of our careers but it was just a great performance.

"They started pushing men forward and it created a bit of space, but they had the majority of the ball.

"It's worked for us and we are in the next round of the cup and we'll take it."
