Chippy that serves champagne pickled quail eggs hailed as one of the best in the UK

A chippy that serves champagne pickled quail eggs has been shortlisted as one of the best fish and chip shops in the UK.

The National Fish and Chip Awards has announced the top 10 semi-finalists for its Restaurant of the Year, which rates businesses based upon their customer service, environmental standards and sustainability.

Chippies up and down the nation were shortlisted in the category, with restaurants in Norfolk, Lancashire, Cornwall, Merseyside, Belfast and Glastonbury managing to nab a top spot.

Among those selected includes the Malt and Anchor in Cirencester, which offers a portion of cod and chips with a bottle of Pontebello Prosecco for £40, reports Gloucestershire Live.

Customers can also get a 'Prawn-ageddon' for the main course, which includes a mix of bubble red shrimp, Bengali breaded king prawns, proper scami and tempura battered prawns.

This can be paired with a side of champagne pickled quail eggs for £4.50, or silverskin pickled onions at £2.80.

Meanwhile, vegans can treat themselves to a jackfruit 'steak', craft ale and black pepper pie, with the option of vegan mash instead of twice-cooked chips.

Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), said: "The National Fish & Chip Awards are such an important part of celebrating the fish and chip industry, whilst recognising the very best in Britain.

"We’re delighted with the standard of applications this year and the Top 10 Restaurants of the Year really reflects the quality and hard-working nature of businesses in the UK. We can’t wait to celebrate at the awards ceremony!"

The awards have been celebrating the nation's favourite dish for more than 30 years, and rewarding the people and businesses who provide Brits with the best of the best.

The judging criteria included customer service, and environmental and sustainably good practices, as well as being able to demonstrate a high levels of knowledge of the Fish & Chip industry.

It comes as the NFFF announces its top 10 finalists for a separate Field to Frier Category, which judges restaurants based on their potato knowledge and fish and chip preparation.

Mr Crook added: "There’s so much more to good fish and chips than the end-product on the plate (or paper!) and it’s great to see so many fish and chip shop owners recognising and implementing this."

The National Fish and Chips Awards will be hosted on February 28 next year at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.
