Chip shop owner left stunned with customer’s weird deep-frying request

A chippy owner was left stunned when a man walked into a chip shop with a very special request.

Handing over a pasty he had picked up for lunch, he politely asked if the owner could batter and deep-fry his pasty.

The owner of the Cornish chip shop was taken aback at first, but went along with the customer’s request.

Lewy’s Fish and Chips in Hayle, which is one of the top rated chippies in the area, was the scene of the strange request from curious foodie Harry Rowsell.

As reported by Cornwall Live, Harry’s first stop was Philps Bakery where he picked up a pasty.

He then took things one step further by heading to Lewy's and requesting that it be coated in a crispy golden batter synonymous with what is often dubbed 'Britain's favourite dish' - fish and chips.

He described the pasty creation as "a bad boy" saying it was "the best thing in the entire Cornwallsphere" and he would have it again.

He said: "I popped down to Philps to grab a few pasties and spotted Lewy's Fish and Chips across the road. With England playing against Scotland in the six nations I thought, why not?

"Went into the chippy. They called me weird at first but agreed to give it a try.

"Customers were telling me Cornishmen would be turning in their grave. I told them they would be coming back from the dead to get a taste on this pasty.

"By the time the first pasty emerged from the deep fat fryer, the owner changed his tone and called it a thing of beauty. He couldn't believe how well it has turned out.

"He told me that nobody had ever asked him to make one in eight years of owning the chippy. But now he is promoting them on his Facebook page. They have caused quite a stir.

“He shared the two pasties among eight work colleagues and says everyone agreed ‘it was the best pasty they had ever eaten’ but that it was certainly filling.”

Pictures of what has been named 'The Pasty Crunch' have now been shared by Harry Rowsell, who works in Sapphire Holidays in Hayle, and the responsible chippy, with the owner saying he will gladly batter pasties for free if people want to try the latest creation.

Writing on Facebook, he said: "What do you guys think? Love these reactions! If anyone wants to give this a go, grab your pasty from Philps and we will batter it for free!"

But others are not so convinced about such a wacky alteration to the Cornish classic.

"We were so excited to know whether we could when we should have stopped to think about whether we should," said Ash Scaife.

Leanne Gilbert said simply "no".

"Why would you do that it's so wrong," she continued.
