A Chinese man was rescued but his wife was later found dead after the pair fell off their rented jet ski in choppy waters near Koh Lan, off the coast of Pattaya.

The woman’s body was found, still wearing a life jacket, about 1.8 nautical miles north of Koh Nok near Koh Si Chang at about noon on Wednesday, according to rescuers.

The man identified as Ma Xiaoxiao, 33, and the woman, Yang Ojong, 28, were staying at a hotel on the island in Chon Buri.

The two tourists rented the jet ski at Tawaen beach on Koh Lan on Tuesday afternoon but did not return by the scheduled time.

Rescuers found Mr Ma at 2.30am on Wednesday. He was given first aid and reported safe.

At 10.40am on Wednesday, the rescue unit found the rented Yamaha jet ski floating in the sea about two nautical miles from Koh Nok, a small island close to Koh Lan. The woman’s body was located shortly afterward.

Mr Ma told police the strong wind was the cause of their fall from the jet ski and they were unable to swim to shore.

The woman’s body was undergoing an autopsy, and police have not confirmed the cause of the incident.
