The year of the monkey begins on Monday 8 February. It is the ninth animal in the cycle. People born in the year of the monkey are known for being lively, curious and innovative, but it is also believed to be one of the most unlucky years in the Chinese calendar.

How will you be celebrating the Chinese new year? We’d like to see your photos and experiences of where you are celebrating and who you are celebrating with.

You can share your Chinese New Year photos and experiences by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ button on this article. You can also use the GuardianWitness smartphone app or the Guardian app and search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments’. We’ll publish the best contributions on the Guardian site.

  • GuardianWitness is the home of user-generated content on the Guardian. Contribute your video, pictures and stories, and browse news, reviews and creations submitted by others. Posts will be reviewed prior to publication on GuardianWitness, and the best pieces will feature on the Guardian site.
