NEW DELHI: Chinese weightlifter Jiang Huihua set a new world record in the women's 49kg clean and jerk category at the World Championships in Riyadh. She lifted an impressive 120kg, surpassing the previous record of 119kg held by India's Mirabai Chanu, which was set at the 2021 Asian Championships.
Huihua not only broke the clean and jerk world record but also established a new world record for the total lift by lifting 215kg. This was two kilograms more than the previous record of 213kg held by her compatriot and reigning Olympic champion Hou Zhihui.
In addition to her clean and jerk achievement, Huihua lifted 95kg in the snatch category, securing the top position in the event.
Hou Zhihui finished second with a total lift of 211kg (95kg in snatch and 116kg in clean and jerk), while Jourdan Delacruz from the USA took home the bronze medal with a total lift of 200kg (88kg in snatch and 112kg in clean and jerk).
Chanu, who is considered a strong contender in this weight class, withdrew from the competition and focused on preparing for the Asian Games, which were scheduled to begin later in the month.
