A young Chinese man was badly injured after falling from the third storey of Airport Rail Link’s Phaya Thai station to the platform on the second storey on Saturday morning.

Police and firemen rushed to the station after being alerted that a Chinese national was trying to jump from the station. An air cushion was deployed to the scene in preparation of a fall.

The man, identified later as Peng Xiangyang, 23, was found standing at the corner on the third storey of the station when police arrived, said Pol Capt Preecha Boon-aree, deputy investigation chief at Makkasan railway police station, who was reported at around 9am.

Wearing earphones, the man, in a grey T-shirt and black jeans, showed no sign he would jump at the time, Thai media reported.

At around 9.17am, the man suddenly fell to the platform on the second storey of the ARL station. He suffered broken bones and was immediately rushed to Rajavithi Hospital.

Pol Capt Preecha said police had examined footage from closed-circuit television cameras which showed that the man had apparently not intended to jump but accidentally fell to the second storey, according to Matichon Online.

The man’s passport showed he entered Thailand on a tourist visa. Police were interrogating witnesses why he went to a concrete pole on the upper floor of the station. They were also awaiting test results to find out whether he was intoxicated.
