China wants EVs to be mainstay of new car sales by 2035

BEIJING -- The Chinese government outlined measures to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and other such automobiles in its 15-year new energy vehicle development plan announced on Monday.

The plan calls for making EVs the mainstay of new car sales by 2035 while increasing the percentage of so-called new energy vehicles in new car sales from the present figure of about 5% to 20% by 2025.

Beijing aims to make the country a world-leading automotive powerhouse by accelerating the spread of new energy vehicles with superior environmental performance.

According to the plan, public transportation and other vehicles used in the public sector will be fully electrified by 2035.

In order to solve the problem of recharging EV batteries, which has been a barrier to the widespread adoption of such vehicles, the plan also specifies expediting the development of charging facilities with rapid chargers, replaceable batteries and wireless recharging equipment.

New energy vehicles comprise EVs, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs).

The plan does not include non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HVs) nor does it refer to the treatment of conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.

A plan announced at the end of October by a group of automotive experts under the guidance of China's industry and information technology ministry called for increasing the share of new energy vehicles in new car sales to more than 50% by 2035, with the remaining gasoline-powered vehicles to be HVs and all new cars to be electric.
