China showcases latest AI, tech moves

China is now promoting its scientific development and technological innovation, and Thailand has been selected to be the first hub in Asia to showcase artificial intelligence (AI) projects and innovative products created by China's state-owned enterprises and related businesses.

CAS Innovation Expo: Bangkok 2018, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok from Oct 9-14, features Chinese government agencies' innovation projects, Thai government agencies' innovation projects, and innovative products from the private sector.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) presented the world's first satellite for quantum science experiment as one of the highlights.

Others include an intelligent sorting system for express packages, which operates with high accuracy (the misclassification rate is less than 0.02%) and runs at a speed of 2m/s and an interactive robot named JiaJia, which has introduced three technologies: expression engine, context understanding and common-sense reasoning.

The Institute of Subtropical Agriculture also presented its mega rice, which features such qualities as great biomass, super tillering ability, good lodging resistance, and anti-premature senescence.

Also showcased was the National Protein Science Research Facility, which became the first comprehensive large-scale scientific facility in this field of life sciences in the world.

Meanwhile at the event, Thailand's National Science and Technology Development Agency presented various innovative products, such as the Wrist-Elbow-Forearm Rehabilitation System, which is an innovation that emerged from the robotics technology and the therapy protocol.

The innovation has resulted in a supporting tool that increases the efficiency of the physical and operational therapy process.

Another interesting innovation by the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) is gluten-free cassava flour.

BIOTEC and Kasetsart University developed a production technology for cassava flour. It is a mechanisation process that turns cassava containing a high level of toxic cyanide into high quality cassava flour with less than 10 ppm cyanide content.

China's ambassador to Thailand Lyu Jian said that China and Thailand have also worked together to create scientific projects, such as the Thailand-China Joint Laboratory on Microbial Biotechnology.
