China set to launch new high-tech aircraft supercarrier as big as nine blue whales

By Kelly-Ann Mills

An enormous high tech aircraft carrier said to be faster and with a larger arsenal of weapons that any other is set to be launched by the Chinese navy.

The Type 003 supercarrier's launch has been pushed back due to coronavirus lockdowns across the country which have delayed its completion.

Weighing in at 90,000 tonnes and longer than nine blue whales end to end, the beast is the said to be the most technically advanced China has ever seen.

The Type 003 is very close in size to the US Navy’s carriers, but according to Naval News the major step change over current carriers will be how it launches aircraft.

The nearly finished aircraft carrier can be seen in this picture (Twitter)

The new ship uses CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) and is believed to use (EMALS) an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System instead of a steam catapult - both of which promise a faster launch rate of the aircraft on board.

The catapults will also mean the Chinese navy launch much newer - and more technically advanced - planes.

New images show the boat in its final stages of the build at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai.

Military experts believe that China's third aircraft carrier will be launched in the second half of 2022.

There is also speculation that the exact launch date may be set as August 1, the Founding Day of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Another source said the carrier is likely to be named 'Jiangsu' after the Chinese coastal province.

The news of an imminent launch of the new carrier comes as America claims China is building up a military capability ahead of what it calls a "planned invasion" of neighbouring nation Taiwan.

Speaking in the US Senate earlier this week US intelligence official Avril Haines said: "It's our view that [China's leaders] are working hard to effectively put themselves into a position in which their military is capable of taking Taiwan."

Before adding that the US believes that China would prefer to avoid a military conflict over Taiwan if possible.

Defence Intelligence Agency head Lieutenant general Scott Berrier added: "I believe the (People's Republic of China) would rather not do it by force.

"I think they would rather do this peacefully over time."

The two officials also agreed that Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to note how the West has approached Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the assistance it has provided the smaller nation.
