BEIJING -- China has recently seen a flood of trademark applications related to Japan's new era name, Reiwa. A total of 1,276 such applications had been filed as of April 30, according to China's trademark office.
The applicants seem to be trying to take advantage of the new era name, but it is unclear whether their applications will be approved.
According to the office, 238 applications related to Reiwa were filed on April 1 alone, when the new era name was announced. The applications were in a variety of fields ranging from cosmetics to food, with examples including "Reiwa beef" and "Reiwa hall." The office said that applications filed on or after April 1 are still under review. It is possible they will not be approved.
