China says UK 'needs miracle' to beat coronavirus after branding response a 'mess'

A state-run Chinese newspaper has accused Boris Johnson's efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak as a 'mess' that needed 'a miracle'.

Global Times, which is seen as a major Chinese propaganda outlet, also said the Prime Minister has put the economy over controlling the killer virus in a scathing attack.

The outlet called the government's response to Covid-19 as "flippant" and "ill-prepared".

The Beijing-based publication tore into the Prime Minister after Mr Johnson told the nation on Sunday to go back to work if they unable to work from home.

Shocking images have since emerged this week of commuters on packed Tube trains which has left them unable to social distance from each other.

The newspaper said Mr Johnson was prioritising the economy over virus control as the track-and-tracing system had not been set up and it would need a "miracle" to get out of the health crisis.

The Global Times also referred to a column by the Guardian on Sunday, in which Simon Tisdall called Britain "the sick man of Europe".

Adding: "It is startling to see the UK, once on which the sun never set, acting poorly in this global fight against the deadly coronavirus."

It also slammed the Government's initial strategy, known as "herd immunity" saying it "wasted a few weeks' time when China fought hard against the virus".

The commentary also slated Boris Johnson's coronavirus exit strategy, saying a contact-tracing system should have been in place before the move.

The author said: "Scholarly analyses have all suggested that the UK government's response to the crisis was as flippant and ill-prepared as that of the US...'"

Britain is currently trialling a 'test, track and trace' app on the Isle of Wight in a three-part plan to stop a second spike.

The app works via Bluetooth and will alert people if they have been in close contact with someone who later tested positive for coronavirus.

The UK Government was tracing contacts in the very first stage of the virus, but stopped as the country went into lockdown.

This decision has been heavily criticised as the track, trace and test regime has been used very effectively in other countries - notably Germany and South Korea as they aim to ease their lockdowns.

The Global Times wrapped up its piece saying Britain's resources had gone to waste due to the Government's decisions.

It said: "The UK is not supposed to end up like this. After all, it is where the Industrial Revolution started. It has abundant capital and medical resources.

"To put it in Chinese proverbs, it didn't play well despite having good cards in hand."

The Global Times calls itself China's 'most belligerent tabloid' and is a strong defender of Beijing's actions while it scolds the West, especially the US, over its criticism against the Community Party.

The coronavirus pandemic first emerged in the city of Wuhan in central China last December.

It is speculated to have started in a wet market where some live animals were illegally being sold.

So far, it has killed more than 297,000 people and infected over 4.3 million around the world.
