China’s Tsinghua University Names New President

What’s new: Tsinghua University has promoted Li Luming, formerly one of its vice presidents and an expert in the integration of engineering and medical sciences, to be its new president.

Li has also been named deputy party secretary of the university, according to a Friday announcement. The 55-year-old was promoted from a standing committee member of the university’s party committee.

One month before the announcement, Li was accepted as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, receiving the title of academician — the highest academic title in China and a lifelong honor given to scientists who have made significant achievements.

Li has replaced Wang Xiqin, who served as the president of the university for less than two years — the shortest term any president of the university has had since at least 1949.

The background: Li was named a vice president of the university in September 2022, in a role that put him in charge of staffing, continuing studies and university-affiliated enterprises.

Li, a native of East China’s Shandong province, is a Tsinghua alum. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1991 and doctorate in 1996 from the university’s mechanical engineering department.

He previously worked as professor and doctoral advisor at Tsinghua’s School of Aerospace Engineering, as well as director of the Institute of Human-Machine-Environment Engineering. His research primarily focused on human-system engineering, brain stimulation and neural regulation.
