Interesting that page 24 of my edition of the Guardian (28 October) reports “UK economy hit by manufacturing slump” (lower growth of 0.5%); and the opposite page has “UK named sixth best country for business”. I wonder if there is any correlation?

• First poppy sighted on 19 October at Euston station, then all TV presenters are wearing them on Saturday 24 October. Most of the larger stores now have their Christmas windows in and departments open and it’s not even Guy Fawkes day yet, never mind Remembrance Day. Has the world gone mad?

• Thanks to Harriet Sherwood (Report, 29 October) for making me squeal with laughter, spitting my pre-work coffee halfway across the cafe, and alerting me to the fact that there’s an “adviser to the all-party parliamentary group on mindfulness”; to the danger of “becoming professionally mindful”; and most of all for the tip-off that “there is a lot of anxiety within the mindfulness community”.
