What’s new: Dong Xin, 53, has been promoted to president of China Mobile Communications Group Co. Ltd., after the position was left vacant for more than seven months.
As well as the position of president, Dong has been appointed a director of the China Mobile board and deputy chief of the firm’s Communist Party group.
He will relinquish his role as chief accountant, the company announced Monday.
Background: China Mobile’s president post has been vacant since previous chief Li Yue retired in September, and rumors have swirled about who would take over as leader of the world’s largest mobile network operator.
Dong graduated from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, before he went on to obtain degrees in management from the Australian National University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
He began his career in telecom-related government departments and was transferred from the company’s Beijing branch and promoted to its Hong Kong headquarters as vice president in 2013.
Dong has worked on the company’s finances and planning for several years. His experience leading provincial subsidiaries in Beijing, Henan and Hainan might be why he was chosen to head the company, a veteran company insider told Caixin.
