China floods: More than a dozen killed and 220,000 flee homes as severe flooding rips through country

More than a dozen people have died and 220,000 have fled their homes as severe flooding rips through south and central China.

Since June 2, around 228,000 people have had to seek emergency shelter, the contry's Ministry of Emergency Management said.

Meanwhile, initial damage has been estimated at more than $500 million, including the destruction of more than 1,000 homes.

Flooding was particularly bad in the southern region of Guangxi, where six people were listed as dead and one missing.

Hunan province - just to the north - has also been severely hit, with seven deaths recorded and one person reported missing.

Seasonal flooding causes heavy damage each year in the lower regions of China's major river systems.

The flooding is particularly bad around the Yangtze and Pearl rivers.

Authorities have sought to reduce the hardship through the use of dams, particularly the massive Three Gorges structure on the Yangtze.

China's worst floods in recent years were in 1998, when more than 2,000 people died and almost three million homes were destroyed.
