China factory explosion sends huge plume of smoke over city and 'shatters windows'

An explosion at a Chinese factory has sent an enormous plume of smoke over a nearby city and shattered windows, according to witnesses.

The explosion happened at a factory in Sanmenxia City, in central China's Henan Province at 5.50pm local time (8.50am (GMT).)

The number of casualties is not yet known.

Video footage from the scene shows thick, grey smoke billowing from The Yima Gasification Plant.

Witnesses report that the glass in windows and doors within three kilometres of the explosion has shattered.

In March this year, a powerful explosion at a chemical plant in China's Jiangsu Province killed 78 people and injured 617 others.

The major incident happened at Chenjiagang Chemical Industry Park, on March 21 at 6.48am (GMT).

The injured included children at a local nursery.

The force of the blast started numerous fires, knocked down several buildings and destroyed windows.
