China Dedicates Special Lane for Pedestrians Using their Mobile Phones

The Chinese city of Xi'an has set up a special lane for pedestrians who use their mobile phones, especially in shopping malls.

The lane will be accessible for them on weekends.

The use of a mobile phone while on the road sometimes leads to traffic accidents or people bumping into each other.

A shopping mall in the city has opened a lane for cellphone-using pedestrians on the Yanta Road, which is 80cm wide and 100m long.

The lane was marked by a mobile phone illustration featuring the word "Cellphone", while the other lane, where mobile users are not allowed to walk, featured a mobile phone illustration with an X on it.

According to reports, cities need security staff to constantly guide vehicle drivers away from sidewalks crowded with unaware pedestrians.

Although this idea sounds laughable to some non-Chinese people, the United States tested the same concept when a similar lane for mobile phone users was set up in 2014 in Washington, DC, as part of a social experiment led by the National Geographic.
