China asserts rights to Senkakus online

BEIJING -- A Chinese government subsidiary agency asserted the nation's territorial right to the Senkaku Islands globally via a website launched Saturday.

The National Marine Data and Information Service of China is promoting the Chinese government's assertion on the website using the islands' Chinese name called "Diaoyu Dao: The Inherent Territory of China" in Chinese and other languages, including Japanese, English and French.

The site insists that Japan stole the islands following the Meiji Restoration and introduces a number of historical records and maps, including 3D topographical images, as the basis for the assertion.
