China and Russia’s Envoys to U.S. Meet to Discuss Biden-Putin Summit

What’s new: China’s Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai met with his Russian counterpart to discuss what happened at last week’s Russia-U.S. summit in Geneva, Russian state-run news reported.

The meeting took place Monday after the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov returned to Washington from Moscow the previous day, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

“The heads of the foreign missions spoke in favor of developing a strategic partnership between our countries, as well as the friendly nature of relations between the Russian and Chinese embassies in Washington,” the Russian Embassy to the U.S. said in a statement.

The background: The diplomats met as Cui is set to leave his post and return to China.

Earlier this year, Russia and the U.S. recalled their ambassadors for consultation following U.S. President Joe Biden’s comments about Russian leadership, increasing tension between the two countries. At last week’s summit, Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow their ambassadors to return to each other’s countries.
