Side of building collapses as high winds batter Hamilton

Part of a building near a popular pub collapsed as high winds battered the west of Scotland.

Emergency services are at the scene close to The Barleycorn in Hamilton after falling masonry landed right next to the road this morning.

The area around the site at Low Waters Road has been cordoned off as fire fighters work to ensure it is safe.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud rumbling before the section of the building collapsed.

But a message on The Barleycorn's Facebook page says they are open for business despite the drama.

It explains: "The Barleycorn open as usual folks, our neighbour's chimney breast blow down due to high winds."

Police Scotland issued a statement warning drivers to avoid the area, saying: "Motorists are asked to avoid Low Waters Road, Hamilton after the side of a building collapsed due to adverse weather.

"No-one has been injured and diversions are likely to be in place for sometime. Thank you for your patience while we deal with this incident."

Scottish Fire and Rescue have been contacted for comment, but there no one is believed to have been injured.
