Canberra shivered through its coldest March day on record on Sunday with the maximum temperature reaching only 15.9 degrees.

The previous record for the coldest maximum Canberra temperature in March was 16.4 degrees on March 30, 2019.

Wintery conditions lingered on Monday morning as temperatures dipped to 3.5 degrees at 5.53am at Canberra Airport.

It was the coldest morning recorded so far in 2021 and the coldest temperature recorded in Canberra since October 11 last year.

By 7am temperatures had only increased to 5.1 degrees with an apparent temperature of 1.8 degrees.

However, the morning chill didn't break any records.

Canberra's lowest March minimum temperature is 0.6 degrees, recorded in 2019.

Despite the chilly start, conditions are forecast to be sunny for the rest of Monday, with temperatures expected to reach 22 degrees.

Dry and mild conditions are predicted to continue into Tuesday, which has a forecast minimum temperature of 8 degrees and a top of 22 degrees.

Cloudy conditions are forecast for Wednesday, with a slight chance of a shower in the afternoon or evening.

Temperatures are forecast to reach 19 degrees, with a low of 9 degrees on Wednesday.

Wet conditions are predicted to return to Canberra on Thursday through to Sunday, with temperatures likely to heat up.

Temperatures are expected to reach 20 degrees on Thursday, 21 degrees on Friday, 23 degrees on Saturday and 24 degrees on Sunday.
