NAKHON PHANOM: Temperatures are likely to drop to single figures during the coming cold season, a senior Meteorological Department official said on Thursday.

Deputy director-general Phuwieng Prakhammin said weather patterns indicated the mercury could plunge as low as 6°C this year, which would be similar to last year.

The weather agency on Wednesday declared this Saturday the beginning of the cold season, which  continues until mid-February.

Mr Phuwieng said the coldest period this year would fall in December in some provinces, including Nakhon Phanom.

The lowest temperature recorded in Thailand was -1.4°C on Jan 2, 1974 in Muang district of Sakon Nakhon province. This excludes temperatures on mountains.
