A tense and emotional moment on a Tennessee highway ended with a life saved after a state trooper acted quickly to pull a distraught woman away from the edge of a bridge, the day after Christmas. The dramatic rescue, captured on body camera footage, has since drawn widespread attention.
The incident unfolded on Friday on the Holston River bridge along Interstate 81 in northeast Tennessee. According to a statement shared by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, officers and emergency responders were dispatched after receiving reports of a woman in serious distress standing on the bridge, cops said on Facebook.
“A woman was in a dark place and was considering jumping,” police said in a social media post. “Because people showed up and worked together, she is alive tonight. “Today ended with a life saved,” the statement continued. “That matters.”
Bodycam footage released by authorities shows the woman, whose identity has not been made public, standing on a narrow ledge above the river below. Several officers and emergency medical workers can be seen calmly speaking to her, attempting to de-escalate the situation and convince her to step back to safety.
For several moments, the situation remains tense as the woman appears hesitant and overwhelmed. Then, in a split second, a highway patrol trooper moves decisively. The video shows the officer lunging forward, grabbing the woman, and pulling her back over the railing and away from danger. Other responders immediately rush in to assist.
Following the rescue, the woman is seen seated inside an ambulance. Authorities confirmed she was transported for medical evaluation, where she could receive further care and support. Officials later reflected on the broader meaning of the rescue, particularly given the timing during the holiday season.
“This time of year can be especially hard,” the department said. “Many people are carrying things no one else can see. Stress, grief, loneliness, and fear can pile up fast. That does not mean someone is weak. It means they are human.”
The Holston River bridge, a busy stretch of Interstate 81, was temporarily impacted during the response as emergency crews worked to ensure the woman’s safety. No injuries were reported among responders.
