Chilling moment cruise line passenger with COVID-19 said goodbye to wife

ITV 's documentary Billion Pound Cruises: All At Sea, explained the terrifying link between the cruise liner industry and the spread of COVID-19.

An elderly couple called Sally and David appeared on the doc and explained what it was like to be quarantined for two weeks on their ship, the Diamond Princess, which was docked in Yokohama, Japan.

They both then became infected with the deadly virus, and David even said goodbye to Sally, his wife of 50 years, because he thought he did not have long left.

"I don't think I actually felt I was going to catch it until they told me I'd got it," said Sally.

"Sally had a bad cough, but we always get a cough because of the air conditioning," said David.

"Mine was a tickle and hers was a real cough, so it wasn't bugging me, I should have realised what was going on, but I didn't.

"And then my health just took a massive nose dive, I hadn't realise how bad my breathing had become."

Sally and David both feared David was going to die on the ship (ITV)

David was taken in an ambulance and rushed to a nearby Japanese hospital, where he tested positive for COVID-19.

"In the ambulance i just couldn't get enough air into my lungs, that just got worse and worse, it was really frightening," he continued.

"I thought, 'This is serious.'"

"We had an eventful night," said Sally.

"David didn't feel well, he just curled up on the bed next to me."

David added: "It was awful, just to turn over in the bed it would take your breath away.

"I said to her, 'It's been 50 great years, but i am ready to have my final sleep'."

"His breathing was so shallow I did think he was dying," said Sally.

But David fought as hard as he could because he refused to leave Sally alone on the boat.

"We are thousands of miles away from home, we've got no other family here, if I did pass away what the hell is she going to do?

"That is what really impacted me to think, let's get your act together," he explained.
