Chilling CCTV shows killer stalking ex-wife before slitting her throat on doorstep

An 'obsessed and jealous' taxi driver disguised himself in a wig so he could stalk his ex-wife and knife her to death on her own doorstep.

CCTV footage shows how killer Mohammed Arfan followed his former spouse, Marena Shaban, as she left work, before slitting her throat and stabbing her 20 times outside her home in Birmingham.

The terrifying clips show how Arfan drove and walked past Marena's shop several times before parking up and waiting for her to arrive home alone so he could kill her, Birmingham Live reports.

Disguising himself in an afro wig and using a recently purchased second hand car, the killer pounced on the mother of his children and launched a "frenzied" attack to take her life.

Further CCTV released by West Midlands Police showed how he laughed and joked with friends in a local barber shop less than half an hour after the brutal murder on January 28.

He was also caught on camera discarding the suspected murder weapon, and abandoned his coat and car, but initially denied having to cover his tracks.

But on July 15, Arfan, 42, of Slade Road, pleaded guilty at Birmingham Crown Court as he admitted: "I took away the life of the woman I loved for so many years."

The court heard how the mum of four had been separated from her former partner for 13 months when she was brutally murdered.

Marena was "greatly concerned" and felt she was being stalked by her ex after she had blocked his number, Prosecutor Peter Grieves-Smith QC said.

But Arfan was unhappy about the separation and still followed her on social media, becoming "obsessed" with her lifestyle.

In an emotional statement, Ms Shaban's mother described the "brutality" of her daughter's murder outside their family home as "unbearable".

She said: "Marena was murdered on the doorstep of our home. The doorstep I have to walk through daily, the doorstep I have to look out of the window and am constantly reminded of the events of 28th January 2022."

Phil Bradley, defending, stated Arfan had no previous convictions, had always worked but had 'no roots in the UK'.

He said: "He struggled with the language and was a private man keeping himself to himself. All of that meant that his sole focus was his family."

Mr Bradley relayed the defendant's final words to him from the cells moments before the sentencing hearing commenced.

He said: "I have devastated the lives of so many people including my sons, my entire extended family.

"Most importantly I took away the life of the woman I loved for so many years. If I could bring her back and offer myself in her place I would do it gladly, but instead I have the horrible reality that I am responsible for her death."

Judge Melbourne Inman QC handed Arfan a life sentence with a minimum jail term of 22 years as he told the killer: "This was a planned attack which arose from your jealously."
