Chilean coup, 1973 - a picture from the past

Chilean President Salvador Allende is flanked by bodyguards as he inspects damage to the Moneda palace in Santiago on 11 September 1973. By the end of the day Allende was dead, reportedly by suicide, and his body was carried from the presidential palace wrapped in a poncho. General Augusto Pinochet, the head of the American-backed coup which ousted Dr Allende's government, went on to rule the country during a brutal military dictatorship which lasted until 1990
