Chile earthquake: 6.3-magnitude tremor strikes north of country

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck northern Chile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake, which was moderately deep at 82 kilometers (51 miles), struck at 3.32am local time Tuesday. The epicenter in Tarapaca was 73 kilometers (45 miles) east of the port city of Arica, and 87 kilometers (54 miles) southeast of the larger Peruvian city of Tacna.

No tsunami warning was in effect, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

The tremor hit near the border with Peru.

A resident of Arica told La Tercera that while the tremors were felt strongly, power and communications remained functioning.
