School bus overturns and traps terrified children heard 'screaming for help'

A number of children "screaming for help" have been trapped in an overturned school bus in Lincolnshire.

Emergency services are dealing with the ongoing incident on Meadow Lane, in North Hykeham, Lincolnshire Police said.

One child suffered a broken arm and has been taken to hospital, Lincolnshire Police said.

A spokeswoman said there were 60 children on the bus.

Police are advising parents of the children to avoid travelling to the scene.

They told Lincolnshire Live: "We were called to reports of an overturned Stagecoach school bus on Meadow Lane, North Hykeham at 8:29am today (11th November).

"Meadow Lane and Brant Road were closed as a result to allow emergency services to deal with the incident.

"A 12-year-old boy sustained a broken arm during the incident and a 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital as a precaution."

It is not yet clear how many children were onboard the school bus.

One motorisy said: "The bus almost collided into another car but the driver managed to steer it into the ditch. I thought it was going to topple over.

"All the cars stopped and I got out, it was pretty scary because all you could hear were the kids screaming for help."

Adam Marsden, 30, said he was travelling behind the bus shortly before it crashed.

He added: "I was travelling through the area at around half eight this morning.

"It looked like the bus just veered off the road - I took the photo at 8.33am. Emergency services were really quick and passersby were helping to extract the kids.

"I don't know how many were on the bus, but it was pretty full, though - kids on upstairs too."

A message from police was also sent to parents asking them not to attend the scene and instead gather at St. Christopher's School.

It read: "We ask that any parents/guardians understandably concerned do not attend the scene and instead go to St. Christopher's School on Hykeham Road which will be used as a rendezvous point."

A statement from the fire service said: "Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue were called to this at 8.32.

"We just have one crew from Lincoln South on the scene who are assisting Lincolnshire Police with scene safety."

A spokesperson for Stagecoach East Midlands said: "Our immediate thoughts are with the children involved and their families. We are giving the police our full support in helping to investigate and establish the circumstances of the incident."
