Children told to leave care home as it is temporarily closed by council

A children's care home in Nottinghamshire has been temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Children were told to leave Minster View care home in Normanton Road, Southwell, which looks after young people with learning disabilities.

The decision was made to reduce the number of children at the home as a result of staffing shortages caused by the pandemic. The children have been temporarily placed in other homes.

The council say 14 staff members were all off work at the same time at one point last year due to having to self-isolate.

This, along with recent practice "not always being of the highest quality", led to the decision to close Minster View.

Steve Edwards, service director for youth, families and social work at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Minster View is a residential home in north Nottinghamshire for young people with disabilities.

"Unsurprisingly, the pandemic has resulted in significant staffing shortages. At one point 14 members of staff were off work at the same time as a consequence of having to self-isolate.

“This, together with an emerging picture that recent practice has not always been of the highest quality, resulted in an initial decision to temporarily reduce the number of children at Minster View.

"More recently, after careful consideration, a decision has been made to temporarily close Minster View."

The care home was rated 'Good' after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission in 2019.

Nottinghamshire County Council has stressed there are no proposals to permanently close the site or any other children's home in the county.

Mr Edwards added: “The decision to temporarily close Minster View has been made entirely in the best interests of the children.

"Parents and carers have all been informed and kept up to date.

"There are no proposals to permanently close Minster View or any other of the local authority’s children’s homes.”
