Children’s play areas in Bolton and Bury to close in bid to stop coronavirus spread

Children’s play areas across Bolton and Bury are to be closed in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Council bosses in Bolton have also decided to shut the town’s parks and libraries until further notice.

They said the decision had been made ‘in light of the latest government guidance on social distance’.

Parks in Bury remain open, but children’s play areas will be taped off. People are being asked not to use the equipment and keep their distance from others.

Bury Council tweeted: “Our parks are still open, but we are taping off children's play areas today to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Please don't use the equipment, and remember to keep your distance from others.”

The moves come as people were seen ignoring the government’s calls for social distancing over the weekend.

Crowds of people were seen flocking to parks, markets, beaches and beauty spots across the country, leading to calls for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to order a widespread lockdown.

Mr Johnson said the government will now think 'very actively in the next 24 hours' about 'restricting movement altogether' due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The government has repeatedly advised people to follow social distancing measures to help reduce the spread of the virus.

They are:

  • To avoid contact with anyone displaying symptoms of COVID-19. These include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough
  • Avoid non-essential use of public transport when possible
  • Work from home, where possible
  • Avoid large and small gatherings in public spaces
  • Avoid gatherings with friends and family
  • Use telephone or online services to contact your GP or other essential services
