Maeve Lowthorpe Allen
Winner: Maeve Lowthorpe Allen, 11, Bristol

This is a picture of my Grandpa. He pretends to my Grandma that he doesn’t smoke, but I caught him at it. He turned round and I snapped this shot. He told me he’d found an old cigarette and was just using it up.

Martin Parr: I could not resist this wonderful portrait. As she says, Grandma does not know he smokes, so the camera can show us a personal - and universal - truth. I hope Granddad won't get into too much trouble.

Anna May
Runner up: Anna May, 11, Buckinghamshire

I’m good at gymnastics but I’ve never joined a club; instead I practise on the sofa. I often film myself using the self-timer and this time it was just a lucky shot! I was amazed at how high I jumped!

Martin Parr: I like the idea of Anna sitting in her room with the self-timer trying to catch her flying antics. She does this with considerable aplomb in this photo.

William Foster
Runner up: William Foster, 6

This is a picture of my sisters Barbie and my Tryceritops. My sister is 7 and I am 6. Sometimes she finks I am a bit too boy and sometimes I think she is a bit too girl but mostly we have fun.

Martin Parr: This is an extraordinary photo for a six-year-old. It is surreal and calm and identifies the way he plays with his sister. Sometimes a juxtaposition just works like this, although it is difficult to understand why. This is the magic of photography.

This is a picture of my friend Evie and my sister Lois. Evie came for a sleepover and I took this photo with my new camera.

Dominique
Dominique, 14, Cornwall

This photo basically sums me up. I’m sweet (and obsessed with unhealthy foods) - the chocolate, I have a very loving heart but I only fall for quite good guys; hence the silver gem heart, the bows are for my personality; bubbly, quirky and can keep secrets.

Ruby Buckle
Ruby Buckle, 11, Gloucestershire

The picture represents my life because it shows me and my house reflected in my trombone. My house and my trombone are big parts of my life. My house for obvious reasons and my trombone because I love to play it and I’m really good at it.

Hope Whiteside
Hope Whiteside, 12, Northumberland

These three special cats are my life because I love them very much and they are not like any lazy cats, they are funny and silly and love eating, like in the picture. The black-and-white cat is called Shrimp, the middle cat is called Marmalade and the ginger cat is called Biscuit. Best cats ever!

Isaac Wain
Isaac Wain, 11, Nottinghamshire

This is my best photograph because it illustrates my interest in reading and combines it with a bear I see very often, my brother’s favourite teddy bear, Cedric. I also love the glint of mischief hidden in his eye!

The Great Escape
Peter Curry, 12

Title: The Great Escape

Two things about me. I visit this street when we go to a local farmer’s market, and I like the film “The Great Escape”. These dogs seemed to be trying to re-enact the film when I visited last month. I hope they didn’t end up in the cooler - or worse.

Mabel Michel Lock
Mabel Michel Lock, 11, Llandysul

I love dancing. When I wear my ballet shoes I feel so floaty and calm. When I wear my jazz shoes I feel so bouncy. My favourite shoes are my tap shoes because tapping makes me feel happy. My grandmother pays for my shoes, she was a dancer.

David McShane
David McShane, 14, Nottinghamshire

This is a reflection of me in Malta, portraying a slightly luxurious lifestyle. It represents my love of books and tea, with them both being predominant features. Also it hints at my personality, showing slight signs of worry in calm surroundings, whilst the curtains hide me from the world.

Adam Priestley
Adam Priestley, 11, Cambridge

I took this photo because I love playing with Romans. The photo is of my toys up against a cardboard Hadrian’s Wall. The lighting is made from a torch because I really liked the shadows.

Samuel Weinberger
Samuel Weinberger, 11, Cambridge

This is a photo of some peas my mum was drying on the ironing board, I put a china owl at the back. To me this photo represents all of the questions that I have in my life, and all of the answers.

Rebecca McLean
Rebecca McLean, 13, Holywood

I love animals. We keep chickens in our garden and this one is very broody at the minute. This photo shows how grumpy she is. She needs lifted off her nest and when we lift her she sits in a huff. She is a very grumpy chicken. But I love her.

Luke Chilley
Luke Chilley, 8, Durham

I love animals so when I went to a museum where you could play with half magnetic animals I had so much fun. I connected them all together and took a photo.

Max Sands
Max Sands, 12, Lancashire

This is Patty. I like to help my dad (who is an animal behaviourist) with his work. She is great in our house but outside she wants to chase cats and attack sheep. I have attached a horse lead to a goal post that stops her from running off.

Waiting Room
Morganne Graves, 15, Bedfordshire

Title: Waiting Room

In a world where nobody knows our destination, we have buried ourselves in schedules, infinite complications and meaningless gossip magazines (origami cranes). We have blocked ourselves in. Perhaps we are in a transition phase; a white Waiting Room. Nevertheless, I am resolute in creating a beautiful life. Note: I am the person in the photo, and it was taken with the timer function.

Sophie Isabella Cropley Russell, 9, West Yorkshire

In my spare time I garden. Me and my mum grew this cabbage together. We ate it today! Our school has won an award from food for life. I am part of the school nutrition action group. I do a gardening club 2 a week. I love gardening!

The picture shows me and my brother walking our dog. Well, our clothes, walking our dog collar! We live in the country and we spend quite a lot of time together outside in the fields. Our dog’s name is Lillie and my brother is Julius. I love our dog but I’m not so sure about my brother.
