Children’s drawings reveal family’s reality inside ICE detention center

  • An Egyptian family of six, the El Gamals, alleges severe mistreatment and medical neglect at the CoreCivic-operated ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, according to newly released documents.
  • These include drawings from the young children with captions that read, “I miss my bear,” and “When we will go home?”
  • The family, including five children aged 5 to 18, has been held for nine months, despite a federal settlement that generally limits family detention to 20 days.
  • The El Gamals report deteriorating mental health, with children experiencing nightmares, and allege poor food quality and denial of adequate medical care for serious conditions.
  • Attorney Eric Lee, representing the family, calls for their immediate release, stating the U.S. government is subjecting the children to "systematic abuse" and "deliberately ruins childhoods."
