Children run into homes in terror after yobs 'swing pickaxes and bats' in the street

Police were called to an estate following reports of a gang fighting armed with "pickaxes and bats".

Children, who had been cheering on England during the Euro 2020 final in their gardens, had to run inside their homes after yobs started fighting on the Leasowe estate, Wirral.

An eyewitness said the yobs "came with pickaxes, bats and whatever else they had", estimating there were "at least 15 of them".

The witness added: "All the kids in the street were in gardens and all had to run indoors as the lads come in the street swinging them around - ruined a good night for a lot of people."

Another said: "Should feel safe where you're living thought this was a close community."

Police confirmed they were called to the scene and said they have stepped up patrols in the area as a result.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 10.50pm on Sunday, July 11 we received reports that a group of male youths were fighting in the Twickenham Drive area of Leasowe.

"Patrols attended but the group had dispersed.

"No injuries were reported and no weapons were confirmed as being seen.

"We have stepped up patrols in the area following the reports and would encourage reporting of any anti-social behaviour to police."

Inspector Jordan Quinn said: “Everyone in our communities has the right to feel safe and protected where they live and we do not tolerate such anti-social behaviour on our streets.

“I would also urge all parents and guardians of young people across Merseyside to know where they are, who they are with and what they are doing.

"We know how concerning anti-social behaviour can be for the community, particularly vulnerable and elderly people, so I strongly encourage members of the public to report incidents of anti-social behaviour to the police so we can take action.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police social media desk via their Twitter @MerPolCC or their Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’.
