Children rescued from sinking yacht on Scots coast after mayday call

Two children were among a family to be rescued from a sinking yacht on a Scots coastline.

A mayday distress call was launched from the group, which included two adults, after the vessel got into difficulty in the water amid bad weather near Oban, Argyll and Bute, on Monday, July 25. Lifeboat crews received the alarm at 2.43pm and scrambled to the scene at Bernera Bay within minutes.

On arrival, rescue teams were transferred onto the yacht with their salvage pump. After the water intake was controlled and the bilges of the vessel pumped, the yacht was escorted back to mainland where it was secured by RNLI staff.

Mark Scott, Oban RNLI Coxswain, said: "The weather was worse than forecast, but we were able to quickly locate the casualty vessel, and the incident was soon resolved thanks to the actions of the volunteer lifeboat crew, the casualty vessel crew and the assistance from surrounding vessels."

The Oban lifeboat returned to station, refuelled and ready for service at 5:45pm.
