Children raced to hospital after fire rips through south London flats

Four children were taken to hospital after flats were destroyed in a fire in south London on Tuesday.

Around 60 firefighters raced to the scene on Barrington Road in Lambeth.

Two flats at the 11-storey block were engulfed in the blaze.

More than 20 people were evacuated from the tower and four children were taken to hospital.

The London Fire Brigade said they were taken there as a precaution and did not report if any were injured.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The LFB said in a statement: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Barrington Road in Lambeth.

“Firefighters tackled a fire at an 11-storey building, where a maisonette flat on the fifth and sixth floors was completely destroyed by fire. Over 20 people were evacuated from the building, four children were taken to hospital as a precaution.

“The Brigade's Control Office took the first of 23 calls about the fire at 0805 and sent fire crews from Brixton, Clapham, Peckham, and other surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control at 0933.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
