Children promise to spend more time with grandparents as nation names favourite

Grandparents across the UK can expect more cuppa-tea chats and phone catch ups from their grandchildren as two-thirds (70%) are promising to spend more quality time with their grandparents after a third (31%) didn’t see them for more than a year during the pandemic.

In fact, over half (53%) say that the last 18 months have made them realise just how important their elderly relatives are to them. So, to celebrate National Grandparents Day on Sunday 3rd October, Buzz Bingo, the UK’s largest bingo operator, has revealed the nation’s most loved fictional grandparents from TV, film and pop culture.

From soap royalty Peggy Mitchell and Ken Barlow, to more recent on-screen grandparents like Game of Thrones’ Olenna Tyrell, the list displays a range of famous grandparents that the nation knows and loves.

Top 10 most-loved on-screen grandparents according to Brits surveyed:

  1. ‘Grandad’ Ted Trotter in Only Fools and Horses (31%)
  2. Abe Simpson in The Simpsons (31%)
  3. Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders (30%)
  4. Jack Gellar in Friends (28%)
  5. Judy Gellar in Friends (25%)
  6. Catherine Tate’s Nan in The Catherine Tate Show (24%)
  7. Jay Pritchett in Modern Family (19%)
  8. Ken Barlow in Coronation Street (18%)
  9. Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones (18%)
  10. June Whitfield (Edina’s Mum) in Absolutely Fabulous (17%)

Harry Lang, Marketing Director at Buzz Bingo said: “Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s clear many of us across the country have missed spending valuable time with our grandparents. But as we’re now able to meet up safely, we want to celebrate the important bond between generations by shedding a light on the most lovable fictional grandmas and grandads.

“It’s so heart-warming to see so many grandchildren and grandparents come into our clubs to enjoy a game of bingo together. And what better day to spend some much-needed quality time with each other than on National Grandparent Day!”
