Children play deadly game of 'chicken' with dual carriageway traffic near Perth

Fears have been raised that primary-aged children are dicing with death by playing 'chicken' on the busy A90 dual carriageway between Perth and Dundee.

The issue was highlighted on social media after two incidents last week.

One near Glencarse is understood to have almost caused a serious crash when a young girl ran across the road.

Police visited St Madoes primary school on Friday morning to ensure children understood the danger of the road and ceased their game.

A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council told the PA: “These reported incidents are extremely alarming and could easily have had devastating consequences.

“Pupils at nearby St Madoes Primary School have been spoken to by Police Scotland road traffic officers and staff about the dangers of playing on busy roads.

“All Perth and Kinross Council pupils are taught about road safety and we would also ask parents to make sure their children are not risking their lives, or the lives of others, by playing on or near busy roads.”

Residents on the St Madoes and Glencarse Community News Facebook page were shocked to hear of the incident, with others confirming. they had encountered the pranking youngsters: “I seen them yesterday about same time. They were running from St Madoes side of the dual into central then over into Glencarse.”

Another added: “I heard cars and lorries tooting. I wondered what was going on. Unbelievable.”

Carse of Gowrie councillor Angus Forbes commented: "I was absolutely horrified to learn that children are playing 'chicken' on the A90 near to St Madoes, this must be absolutely terrifying for drivers who were involved.

"I am pleased that no one has been hurt but this sort of behaviour could so easily end in tragedy.

"I understand that the police have been to St Madoes School to talk to the children and I urge all parents to talk to their children about the dangers of this sort of activity."
