Children 'on their way to a holiday' involved in Switch Island crash

A mum and her three children going on holiday were involved in a three car crash at Switch Island.

Emergency services were called to the M58 at Switch Island following reports of a crash involving three cars at around 2pm on Monday, September 12. Once at the scene officers found three vehicles - a BMW Z4, Audi Q5 and a Vauxhall Mokka - had crashed into each other and were blocking multiple lanes of traffic.

Officers from the North West Motorway Policing group closed three lanes of traffic on the M57 towards Broom's Cross Road, three lanes of Dunningsbridge Road eastbound towards Maghull an the M58. Merseyside Police requested assistance from the North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and multiple people were treated at the scene.

The ECHO understands one of the drivers of the car was a mum going on holiday with her three children. The woman said: "I was the driver of the Mokka on my way to a holiday with three kids in the back.

"We'd come from McDonald's driving safely. The lights were on green so went across to be hit from the right by a car coming off the motorway. Fire men said they have 50 accidents here a year. The change in lights time is not long enough but nothing is getting done about it.

"Whoever designed that is a joke. So to you all saying signs are okay and it's drivers speeding, stop and think about it because not all cases are like that...be considerate because next time it could be you."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police confirmed nobody was believed to be seriously injured in the crash. The M58 was reopened two hours later after the vehicles were recovered from the scene.

The ECHO approached Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service regarding crashes at the Switch Island junction. A spokesperson provided figures to the ECHO which showed the year with the most crashes at Switch Island and the surrounding roads was 16 in 2021/22.

There have been five crashes in 2022/23 so far. The spokesperson said the figures only showed crashes attended by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. They added incidents not attended by the fire service would not have been recorded in the figures.

The ECHO also approached Merseyside Police for comment.
