Children ‘need recommended daily allowance of arts lessons’, campaigners say

Children should have a “recommended daily allowance” of the arts to make up for all they missed during the pandemic, campaigners urged on Wednesday.

A child psychologist and a group of primary school teachers said children would benefit from spending 65 minutes a day taking part in art subjects, including 17 minutes on literature, 12 minutes on music and 11 minutes on drama.

The “five-a-day” rule, normally applied to fruit and vegetable consumption, could be used to ensure children get enough of the arts, they said.

Other subjects that should be enjoyed daily include art for 14 minutes and dance for 11 minutes.

The RDA for the arts was created with guidance from child psychologist Laverne Antrobus and 504 primary school teachers to mark the launch of Sky Arts’ Access All Arts week, an education programme for primary schools.

Ms Antrobus said the “brilliant” idea of a recommended daily allowance for the arts would have “huge wellbeing benefits for a young child, helping them to develop self-confidence and a positive self-image”.
