Children may have to learn through the summer to catch up

The Government is looking at a number of initiatives that will help children catch up the lost eight weeks of school missed through lockdown.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson says the Government is currently looking at a number of summer initiatives to help children catch up ahead of the next school year.

Speaking at the Downing Street briefing on Saturday he said the Government had ruled out starting the next school year early.

But he said there could be a number of initiatives running through the summer.

Mr Williamson said: “We are looking at different initiatives that we could maybe look at rolling out during the summer period.”

He said the projects are currently a work in progress and details could not yet be released.

It comes as the Government prepares to send back some children to schools in England from June 1.

They will be in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 in Primary with face to face meetings for Years 10 and 12 in secondary schools.
