Children 'in tears' after spending hours in huge traffic queues ahead of BBC Summer Social

Children were reportedly left in tears after being caught in huge queues of traffic as families headed to the BBC Summer Social.

Parents and drivers who were caught up in the chaos on Muirhead Avenue and Queens Drive said that their children were left agitated and upset while waiting in the traffic that stretched for miles .

One dad said his family were trapped in the queues and that his daughter had been crying for over an hour.

Sam Hitchmough told the ECHO: "Weve been in the queue for over two hours with hundreds of other cars.

"After spending over £100 on tickets, this is a joke. My daughter has been crying most of the last hour now."

One woman said the traffic began building shortly after 9am this morning.

She was forced to abandon her own car away from her house and walk home with bags of shopping after being unable to get through the traffic.

She said: "Just awful, there are kids crying in cars. Saw one family take a child out of the car for a wee."

Frustrated customers have complained on social media about the queues.

Twitter user @jimmyb5566 said: "Just arrived and got in!!!! that's 4 hours people! The day is nearly over.

"The kids are heartbroken as they have missed everything they wanted to see."

Dominic Hignett also said: "Given up trying to access the event, kids were really upset spending over two hours stuck in traffic.

"I will be claiming a refund as you have not provided access to the event despite selling me tickets for the event! So disappointed."

BBC Summer Social released a joint statement with Liverpool City Council in regards to the chaotic traffic over the last two days.

It said: "We apologise to anyone who has been delayed getting into the car parks at Croxteth Park for Summer Social today.

"The ongoing impact of last week's torrential rain has meant that we have been unable to use one of the car park entrances which has slowed things down considerably.

"Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to get people in as quickly as possible."
