Children in Need: Terry Wogan pulls out for 'health reasons'

Terry Wogan has pulled out of presenting the annual Children in Need fundraiser for health reasons.

Sir Terry has presented the BBC’s charity show since the inception of the programme in 1980, campaigning extensively for the charity and frequently took part in well-publicised sponsored events.

The BBC has not announced who will replace the 77-year-old, who described the annual event as “inspiring” and “wonderful”, on Friday night.

“The British public, as always, will dig deep in their pockets and purses to help the country's disadvantaged children, knowing that every penny will go to those who need it most,” Sir Terry said in a statement.

"I'm going to miss our wonderful, inspiring evening together, but I'll be with you, watching, cheering and donating to a magnificent cause."

He added the show will continue to be “bigger and better than ever”.

The annual charity fundraiser will be hosted by Tess Daly, Rochelle Humes, Nick Grimshaw and Fearne Cotton.

A BBC spokesperson said they were “so sorry” the veteran broadcaster would be unable to present the show, adding a replacement would be announced in “in due course”.

"But we wish him a very speedy recovery and know he'll be watching from home and enjoying the show."
