Children In Need fundraiser Alex sets a Knockhill record in smallest car

FUNDRAISER Alex Orchin has enjoyed a spin around Fife’s famous Knockhill circuit as he attempts to drive from John O’Groats to Land’s End in the world’s smallest production car.

Alex is undertaking the 870-plus-mile journey in his replica Peel P50 to raise money for Children In Need.

He hopes to complete the task in about three weeks as the fibreglass-bodied three-wheeler only has a top speed of 35mph and it weighs less than 100kg.

Fitted with a moped engine, the P50 is not motorway-legal, so Alex is driving from place to place on quieter roads and busking with his bagpipes along the way to raise awareness.

The 31-year-old musician, from Sussex, told our company's SussexLive website: “The car is deafeningly loud – the engine is just under your right leg and it gives out quite a lot of heat.

“There’s a lot of vibrating and, because the tyres are so tiny, you feel any bump in the road – it is not comfortable. The handling is a bit all over the place, too.”

Knockhill events director Stuart Gray explained that he invited Alex to visit and stay overnight after hearing about his epic charity mission.

Stuart said: “He did three laps and, on his final run, managed a time of two minutes, 50 seconds – setting a record for the slowest road car around Knockhill. We wish him the best of luck and hopes he keeps safe and raises loads of money for Children In Need.”
