Children in Liverpool primary school face back to back isolation spells

Children at a Liverpool primary school have been sent back into isolation just days after a previous 10-day stint ended.

Reflecting a trend that has been reported in schools across the country, Year 5 students at Wellesbourne Primary School in Norris Green were told they needed to go back into isolation earlier this week.

Other year groups in the school have also had to go into isolation at various points, though Year 2 and Nursery have returned to classrooms today.

Wellesbourne is just one of a number of schools dealing with the impact of rising Covid cases and the havoc they wreak on schools.

Earlier this week, Liverpool Council confirmed that just under 7,000 pupils across the city were isolating as a result of the impact of rising Covid cases on school bubbles.

Nurseries, primary and secondary schools have all been affected.

Education secretary Gavin Williamson confirmed earlier this week that he wanted to end the bubble policy later this month to reduce the disruption to pupils, teachers and parents.

Speaking on Wednesday, he said: “What I want to see is these restrictions including bubbles removed as quickly as possible along with wider restrictions in society.

“I do not think it is acceptable that children should face greater restrictions over and above those of wider society especially since they have given up so much to keep older generations safe over the last 18 months.

“Further steps will be taken to reduce the number of children who have to self-isolate including looking at the outcomes of a daily contact testing trial as we consider a new model for keeping children in schools and colleges.

“We constantly assess all available data and we expect to be able to confirm plans to lift restrictions and bubbles as part of Step 4.”
