Children in Junior Infants sent home after Covid-19 case confirmed at north Dublin school

Children in Junior Infants have been sent home after a coronavirus case was confirmed at a primary school in north Dublin.

A message sent to parents said that all pupils from the class will be kept at home for two weeks.

It was also made clear that students from Junior Infants had no contact with any other classes.

The school will continue as normal, and any other pupils that aren't considered close contacts are not required to take a test.

But the Department of Health advises that if any children at the school develop Covid-like symptoms they are asked to contact their GP as soon as possible.

All confirmed close contacts have been asked to restrict their movements for 14 days.

However any siblings living in the same household are not required to stay home from school.

It comes after a primary school in North Cork became the third in the county to record a Covid-19 case and the HSE has been carrying out a public health risk assessment after alerting parents and staff.

Scoil Bhríde in the village of Rathcormac, south of Fermoy, contacted the families of over 400 children to say a case had been identified, Cork Beo reports.

A letter from the HSE was forwarded to the parents from the school principal, informing them that a risk assessment had taken place, those who had been in close contact with the confirmed case had been advised and that all other kids could attend school as normal this morning.

The letter, seen by CorkBeo, advised parents: “If your child has not been identified as a close contact at this time, your child does not need a test for Covid-19, they can continue to attend school, and no further actions are required at this time".

However, the advice from the HSE is for children not to attend school if they are showing any symptoms of the virus.

If parents are concerned, they should immediately contact their GP and ensure their kids do not go to school, use public transport, go to shops or other public places or have visitors to their home.

The symptoms listed include a cough, a fever, loss or change in sense of taste or smell.

The Rathcormac school is the third in Cork county to confirm a case of Covid-19 since schools have opened again.
