Children in England will get free school meals this half term

Catering giant Compass has confirmed it will cover the cost of free school meal parcels to children over half-term after its Chartwells division was criticised over poor-quality hampers.

The group was forced to apologise after images showing the low standards of its food parcels were widely shared on social media, prompting Prime Minister Boris Johnson to admit the offering was “disgraceful”.

Chartwells said it had taken measures to address issues, such as improved supply chain processes, additional guidance and resources for its employees, and stronger quality assurance checks.

It said: “Since 25 January, Chartwells has been providing breakfasts to all children currently receiving a lunch parcel from us for the duration of school closures.

“We will also provide those same children with lunch and breakfast parcels through the February half-term break. The costs of these initiatives will be covered by Compass.”
